You have booked your newborn photography session and it is time to start planning outfits! The following is a guide to help you decide what to wear for newborn photos.

WHAT KIND OF OUTFITS WORK BEST FOR NEWBORN PHOTOS?

Simple, light colored clothing is best for newborn photos.

Why?

1. Newborn babies are small and easily overwhelmed in photos by bold colors and patterns
2. Wearing all light colored clothing results in light airy photos and a softer overall look.
3. Simple, light colored clothing allows your baby and your love as a family to be the focus of your photos

WHAT SHOULD MOM WEAR

For moms, long dresses photograph beautifully and tend to be flattering post partum.  They also allow you to easily sit, stand or lay on a bed for photos. Fabric that flows or has a little bit a texture are flattering.

If you are coming to my studio for a newborn session I have a collection of white dresses available for moms to wear. I have selected styles that are flattering postpartum and have a variety of sizes available so you don’t have to worry about what will fit or photograph well on session day.

WHAT SHOULD DAD WEAR

For dads, a light weight neutral color shirt and any lighter color pant ( grey, tan, olive, etc.) works well. 

WHAT SHOULD OLDER SIBLINGS WEAR

Simple light colored clothing that looks put together but is comfortable and requires minimal adjustment is ideal. The arrival of a new baby is a lot so this is not the best time for formal wear that is itchy, pinches or requires lots fussing and tucking. We don’t want to use up all their patience and all your bribes just getting dressed!

For girls, a light colored dress or a longer top with leggings are two great options. If you go with a dress, make sure it is long enough to cover underwear when sitting or consider adding a cream pair of leggings underneath. Nothing ruins a sweet sibling moment faster than having to constantly readjust clothing on a wiggly toddler!

Since newborn sessions are indoors, bare feet are best.

WHAT SHOULD GRANDPARENTS WEAR

I love to include grandparents in newborn photo sessions regardless of what they happen to be wearing but if possible lighter neutral colors are ideal here too!
