Expecting in 2025?  Now is the time to reach out about scheduling a newborn photography session with our Boston studio!

Newborn sessions are offered at our Back Bay Boston studio as well as in home in the city’s surrounding suburbs.

SOME FREQUENTLY ASKED NEWBORN SESSION QUESTIONS:

How does newborn scheduling work?

Newborn sessions are tentatively booked for two weeks following your due date with an exact date finalized after baby arrives.

When should you book a newborn session?

I like to get my newborn clients on the calendar 1-3 months before their due date.  This ensures time to thoroughly go over how everything works and plan outfits.  Once baby arrives all we need to do is finalize a date!

However, I also appreciate that many of my clients have experienced complications or loses on the road to baby and are not comfortable scheduling until that precious baby is in their arms.  If this is you, I completely understand and will do my best to accommodate a more last minute session.

What is the best age for newborn photos?

Between 2 and 4 weeks is my sweet spot.  Baby is still newborn size but everyone has had a little time to recover and settle in.  Baby may not be on a schedule, but feeding routines are at least more established.

I understand that when a new baby will come and what your recovery will look like are hard to predict, so I keep plenty of flexibility in my schedule to accommodate the timing that works best for your family.

Choosing a newborn session location. Studio or in home?

I offer the option of scheduling your newborn session at my Boston studio or at your home.

The advantages of my studio?  Wardrobe for mom.  Lots of natural light.  Simple, neutral backgrounds.  No need to get the house ready.  There is room for extended family and dogs are welcome. I am centrally located in Boston’s Back Bay, within walking distance or a short drive of the South End, Fenway, Beacon Hill, Cambridge and Jamaica Plain.

The advantages of in home? No need to navigate packing up and getting out of the house with a newborn.  Easier on moms who may be having a tougher recovery physically.  Easier for work at home dads to participate in the session with limited time away from work. Allows us to include your nursery and other areas of your home in your photos.

As a first time parent it is hard to anticipate what the first few weeks at home with a newborn will look like so when you book a session with me you do not need to make a final decision on the location of your session until after your baby arrives.

Can my dog be included?

Yes! Dogs are welcome at both studio and in home sessions!

So exactly how does a studio newborn session work?

When baby is between 2 and 4 weeks old we arrange a weekday morning for you to come to my studio.  At my studio I have 100+ dress options for mom, everything needed to photograph baby (blankets, wraps, headbands, flowers), baby essentials like a changing table stocked with extra diapers and wipes and new parent essentials like cold drinks, snacks and hot tools for hair touchups.

I will start the session by meeting your baby and helping with any final wardrobe decisions.

Next I will transition the baby from their car seat and comfortably swaddle them. From here we will follow baby’s lead.  If baby is sleepy, we will start with pictures of baby sleeping in various wrapped and unwrapped poses on my newborn posing pillow.  If baby is looking to be held, we will start with parent pictures.  If baby is hungry, we take a feeding break.

The entire session typically takes between one and two hours and is a relaxed natural way to document your first days falling in love with your new baby!

So exactly how does an in home newborn session work?

When baby is between 2 and 4 weeks old we arrange a weekday morning for me to come to your house.  I will arrive with a newborn posing pillow, blankets, wraps, a few simple accessories and camera gear for photographing baby.

I will take a quick tour of the areas of your home you are considering using for the session and together we will decide which areas will work best for pictures.  Often this is the nursery and master bedroom but sometimes a beautiful window, living area or outdoor area are added to the mix.

If necessary I will do a quick declutter of the areas we will be using for photos and find an area with good natural light to set up my newborn posing pillow and blankets.

From there we will follow baby’s lead.  If baby is sleepy we will start with pictures of baby sleeping on the newborn posing pillow.  If baby is looking to be held we will start with parent pictures.  If baby is hungry we take a feeding break.

The entire session typically takes between one and two hours and is a relaxed natural way to document your first days falling in love with your new baby!

How long does a newborn session typically take?

As long as you or baby need, but the average time at my studio for a newborn session is between one and two hours.

My goal is for our time together to be stress free and enjoyable.

My newborn posing is focused on things babies naturally like and are comforted by at this age so you do not have to worry about lots of crying or hours spent trying to get baby posed in ways they are not comfortable.

What should we wear for our newborn session?

I recommend everyone being photographed wear lighter neutral colors and avoid dark denim as well as black.  For dads, a light weight neutral color shirt and any lighter color pant ( grey, tan, olive, etc.) works well.  For moms, long dresses photograph beautifully.

I have a large, size inclusive collection of dress at the studio that you are welcome to borrow from.  If you are not a big dress person, a neutral colored top or white dress shirt with lighter color jeans also photographs beautifully.

I have a variety of blankets and wraps for swaddling so no wardrobe is needed for your newborn!

Is hair and makeup included?

Hair and makeup services can be added on to your session. At booking you will receive more detailed information about in home and Newbury Street salon options.

What happens after our newborn session?

Within two weeks of your newborn session you will receive a link to view your photos in an online gallery.

Digital files, albums and framed fine art prints are available to purchase.

Ordering can be completed through email, or if you’d prefer, we can schedule an in person meeting at my studio or your home so we can walk through product customizations and finishes together.
